Anthony Lanier's 3303 Water Street N.W. has always been a notable address, but events of the last week might make it a good backdrop for a reality show, "White House Girlz of DC."
Also known as "The Dorm," the modern brick-and-glass structure is reportedly home to Barack Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, Michelle Obama friend and chief of staff Susan Sher, and until last week, White House Social Secretary Desiree Rodgers. The longtime friends from Chicago were said to be bosom buddies in the loft apartments, sharing dinners and dishing about all manner of East Wing-West Wing drama.
Until Desiree became the drama in a famous moment that turned a swell evening into an international embarassment with the swoosh of a red sari and a Facebook post or two.
Media reports say Rodgers then lost the confidence of the First Lady, who with Jarrett and Sher engineered her ouster. Rodgers' resignation "didn't hit me hard," Jarrett told Politico, because she didn't intend to stay more than a year. Brrrr!
Did Jarrett and Sher turn on their dormmate in a secret sorority putsch? Did Desiree deserve it, by provoking their jealously with her fabulous Comme des Garcons threads and trips to New York Fashion Week? Did brains gang up on beauty? Finally, did fellow dormmate and Fox News anchor Bret Baier stir the pot to get revenge for the White House's near freeze-out of the conservative media megaphone? What did Roger Ailes know and when did he know it?
It's the stuff of a good David Rothman novel, or at least a daydream over hot cocoa at Leopold's.
