America in Flanders Fields
A discussion at Tudor Place about the relationship between the United States and Belgium during WWI.
Tudor Place presents America in Flanders Fields on November 1, 2022 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
When German troops invaded neutral Belgium in 1914, the United States was ready to help. Thousands of US citizens crossed into Canada and fought for Belgium disguised as Canadian soldiers while future president Herbert Hoover saved millions of Belgians from starvation through his Commission for Relief. Dr. Dominiek Dendooven and Pieter Trogh will discuss the relationship between the United States and Belgium during WWI.
Dr. Dominiek Dendooven is a researcher and curator at In Flanders Fields Museum, Ypres, Belgium, a research fellow of the Centre for Political History of the University of Antwerp and an honorary research fellow at both United Service Institution of India – Centre for Armed Forces Historical Research in Delhi and the Centre for the History of War, Media and Society of the University of Kent.
Pieter Trogh is a researcher and curator at In Flanders Fields Museum, Ypres, Belgium. Since 2011, he has coordinated the museum’s ambitious List of Names project. His main research themes for World War I are civilian casualties, refugees, French military presence on Belgian battlefields and written accounts of the war.
