Artist Talk and Tai Chi Workshop
Learn and practice the five principles of Tai Chi at Kreeger Museum.
Join David Carlson, an artist featured in Here, in this little Bay: Celebrating 30 Years at the Kreeger and a practitioner of Taijiquan for over thirty years, for a talk on September 14, 2024 starting at 10:00 am about his paintings. Followed the talk is a beginning Tai Chi workshop. Carlson’s practice of Tai Chi and focus on the mind/body connection has informed his work which uses abstraction to explore the intersection of nature, perception, and spiritual awareness. He points to photographer Emmet Gowin’s observation:
"Perception comes out of your own body. We don’t have a mind separate from our bodies. I am somebody who thinks that their body knows just as much as any thought they ever had. And I like for my body to listen to my mind when it has a good idea."
Carlson is a senior student to Master Julian Chu and currently teaches for the Wei Hwa Chinese School where he took classes with Mr. Chu. He has participated with Ben Lo’s camps and studied with Li Hwa in Kunming, China. His experience is combined with a Zen practice based on the Teachings of Thich Nhat Hahn, which has led him to a deeper understanding of the mind/body relationship.
During the workshop, participants will learn and practice the five principles of Tai Chi through a series of movements. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes. The workshop will be held outdoors.
