Bernstein's MASS at the Kennedy Center
Music honoring the Center’s namesake, the nation’s first Roman Catholic president.
As the concluding event of Kennedy Center’s 50th Anniversary celebration, Leonard Bernstein’s MASS returns 51 years after its world premiere at the Center’s 1971 opening gala.
Relive this historic moment September 15, 17 & 18 in a can’t-miss re-staging of Bernstein's MASS—a monumental melding of classical, jazz, gospel, Broadway, and so much more.
Commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Leonard Bernstein chose to base the work on the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Tridentine Mass, to honor and memorialize the Center’s namesake, who was the nation’s first Roman Catholic president.
